A good opportunity to leave everything and embark on a long trip is to take part in a volunteer program. Sometimes we need a push to decide to leave everything and that is a great option. Through this experience you will not only get out of the routine where you are and want to leave - any trip would meet this simple requirement - but it will also allow you to know a new culture in a very direct way with the society with which you are going to contact
Traveling alone - more than accompanied - opens the ears and the mind. It makes you look for solutions and contact those people, so different from your own culture, to respond and have the most basic things tied up in this life - bed, hot dinner and bath - something that is so obvious at home that you forget about full.
If we add to this formidable experience the opportunity to work voluntarily in an NGO where we will be in direct contact with disadvantaged people of that country, the impact and personal enrichment that the experience will give us is triggered.
There are many organizations located in third world countries that will welcome you with open arms. Sometimes, sending a curriculum from five thousand kilometers is of little use since what they need is someone who is there and at that time. If you are traveling and you go through one of them and offer them your collaboration, it is very likely that they will welcome you somewhere and feed you during your stay.
Traveling through Asia I stopped a few weeks in a boarding school in Mumbai through a small NGO where I met some wonderful kids. I had been traveling for six months, moving from one place to another, getting closer to the culture and people of Asia but I needed closer contact. Being in touch with Ashray's kids offered me that opportunity.
The Indian NGO of the CCDT has a series of programs for disadvantaged children in the slums of Mumbai. They also have a tiny branch in Barcelona called Els amics of the CCDT.
If you want to embark on a long journey with a good cause at hand, I recommend it with all my heart.
